Autism

Autism is caused by a genetic predisposition for immune dysregulation and detoxification weaknesses with exposure
to environmental agents, including allergens, infections and toxins.

Diagnosis and Management of  the underlying medical problems associated with autism thus include laboratory testing
for, and treatment, when found:
  • Allergies (food and environmental)
  • Autoimmune Disease
  • Birth brain injury
  • Diets (GFCF, Feingold, PST)
  • Insomnia- (airway  obstruction, fungal infection, melatonin deficiency, seizure)
  • Heavy metal poisoning  testing and treatment
  • Infections (bacterial, fungal, parasitic, viral)
  • Lyme testing (LDA standard of care)
  • Neuroimmune Disorders
  • Nutritional deficiencies
  • Stool (Celiac, inflammation, infection, maldigestion)
  • Thyroid  testing and treatment
  • Seizures
  • Sleep Disorders

  • Detoxification of heavy metals,  and other toxins with amino acids, antioxidants, chelating agents,
glutathione, and minerals
  • Diets
  • Environmental clean up
  • EEG, Head MRI and NeuroSPECT, as needed
  • Genetic testing including genomics and counseling
  • Infections-treating chronic bacterial, fungal, Lyme, parasitic, and viral infections
  • Nutrition & tailored amino acid, mineral and vitamin supplementation

  • Coordination of Care
  • Conference with other specialists
  • Neuropsychologists, Nutritionists ,and Behavioral, Occupational, Physical, Speech and Vision
    therapists
  • Road map for therapy
  • Triage to other clinicians as needed for  consultation
  • Most children come off the spectrum if treatment is started early enough. Older patients have
improved  whole body health, including improved immune,  gut, and brain health.

  • MTHFR gene mutation is associated with an inability to rid body of heavy metals (why autistic
children are more affected by thimerosol in vaccines than other children).  Lack of methylation.

  • Nutritional deficiencies (especially amino acids, essential fatty acids, B vitamins, minerals,
    detoxification nutrients)

  • Gut infections (fungal, bacterial, parasitic) Lack of probiotics, good bacteria in gut (often from use of
antibiotics in mother during pregnancy, antibiotics in child), leading to:
    a)   suboptimal production of vitamins
    b)   susceptibility to infections, (both in gut and body)
    c)   susceptibility to inflammation in gut
    d)   susceptibility to development of gut cancer

  • Food allergies (delayed hypersensitivities, IgG-mediated, via blood testing not RAST testing)
  • Fungal sinusitis (chronic nasal congestion)
  • Hearing problems (chronic serous otitis, otitis media, central auditory processing deficits)
  • Insomnia:
    a) deficiency of sulfur containing amino acids needed to produce melatonin, sleep hormone
    b)  fungal infection
    c)  suboptimal RBC level of magnesium
    d) sugar dysregulation

  • Seizures, epileptiform activity- may be secondary to underlying other medical problems, which may
be alleviated or lessened with treatment
    a) Medical problems
             1)  mercury poisoning
             2)  inflammation
    b)
             1) gluten and other food immunoreactivity
             2)  allergies (need to remove trigger)
             3)  balance of an increase in proinflammatory foods (grain-fed animals and dairy) which increase
PG E2  and lack of  antiinflammatory foods (omega 3 essential fatty acids, especially DHA ie fish
               oils increase PGE3)

  1.  Trial of casein and gluten free diet
  2.  Multivitamins and multiminerals
  3. Ttreat for cysteine, sulfate and glutathione, amino acid, essential fatty acid, iron, lithium,
    iodine and other nutrient deficiencies
  4. Rid the body of gut infections and inflammation

  • Methylcobolamine shots (vitamin B12 shots, later may add folinic acid, N-acetylcysteine)
  • DMPS or DMSA chelation to get out heavy metals, if present
  • Chronic serous otitis or otitis medias
  1. Replete glutathione
  2. Remove allergic triggers
  3. Dairy-free
  4. Osteopathic treatment (for impairment in mechanical drainage)
  5. Probiotics
